There’s a large number of reasons to have sleep troubles, from having an uncomfortable bed or noisy family, to insomnia or anxiety induced racing thoughts, to muscle aches and painful health ailments.

Whatever your problem is, essential oils are a fast and easy way you can get better sleep. To aid the use of essential oils, ask yourself what else can be done or stopped to help you get a good night’s sleep. 

While plants and herbs have a wide array of medicinal properties, many of these listed have been used in various cultural and spiritual practices. It would be in your benefit to do your research on where these beautiful plants come from, and who exactly is to thank for whichever practice you are going to use.

1. Lavender essential oil 

Lavender essential oil has been used in treatment for anxiety and depression disorders, and has been known to alter brain activity in the brainstem, thalamus, and cerebellum when inhaled. This is a very fast and effective way to get immediate relaxation and relief for better sleep. It is also known to improve our natural sleep cycle, leaving you more rejuvenated the next day. This may help people with these mood tendencies get better sleep (source). 

There are different types of lavender plants, but they all have the same major chemical compound and health benefits. Our skin absorbs lavender oil very well, so it is best rubbed into the skin as a topical or taken orally, like in your tea (source). The ways the lavender can heal our body seems to have no limit, name a problem you have and lavender may be able to help you. It grows wild, so I highly recommend foraging for lavender in your area, safely with a mask of course. This plant grows best in the Mediterranian, so it likes the dry heat. 

2. Spruce Needle essential oil

The effects of spruce needle tea have been compared to chamomile. It’s soothing effects can make you feel heavy and at peace, which makes for better sleep. The wonderful thing about spruce needles is that they grow year round, and can be easily collected if you live by spruce trees. Diffusing spruce needle essential oil before bed may help you get better sleep. Pregnant women are going to want to avoid this one.

3. Patchouli essential oil 

There are different types of patchouli, some being indigenious to the Philippines and some to India. It’s known for its musky and earthy scent, which usually evokes comforting and soothing feelings. In chinese medicinal practices, it is used “cold, nausea, diarrhoea, dermatitis, vomiting, abdominal pain, headache, fever, dampness and to stimulate appetite”, and in Indian practices as “insect repellent to keep insects away from garments” (source). This means patchouli can soothe your symptoms and sooth your mind, making for a night of better sleep. 

4. Ho Wood essential oil

This plant is known to relieve stress from the body, which may help a lot of people get the relaxation they need to get better sleep. It is also used for menstrual relief, and for cuts and scrapes (source). At the same time, ho wood is also very healing for our skin, and can cause a “glowing” effect. Ho wood is used best distilled in a diffuser. 

5. Geranium essential oil or 6. Rose essential oil

These flowers, similar in smell, are both known for their positive psychoactive effects and for reawakening positive memories. Rose is known to be a natural antidepressant for this reason. This can help create the perfect mood for a good night’s rest. As well as assuring better sleep, rose and geranium oil essential oils both have healing qualities and do wonders for our skin. 

7. Ylang Ylang essential oil

This oil is simply amazing. It can be used to enhance memory and cognition, relaxation, it can measurably decrease heart rate, kill bacteria, and lower blood pressure. This oil is so powerful and intense it can kill lice (source). It’s important to note where ylang ylang originated: the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia. This is something you should research, people have been using this plant for medicinal and spiritual practices for ages. 

8. Clary Sage essential oil

Clary sage has been loved and used for thousands of years, and is adored for it’s qualities of easing tension and invigoration, balancing and restoring the body. Some recommend putting a few drops on the bottom of your feet (source). If you are one that not only struggles with going to sleep but staying asleep as well, clary sage may be right for you. It’s soothing properties can reduce cortisol levels, the stress hormone. This essential oil would make it easy for your body to go to sleep and rest through the night, making for much better sleep.
